Our Long Paws Promise

At Long Paws, our mission goes far beyond storytelling.

We are deeply committed to supporting the incredible greyhound charities who rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome thousands of greyhounds every year. These organisations work tirelessly – often with limited resources – to give rescued racers the second chance they deserve. Their dedication ensures that greyhounds who have spent their lives on the track can finally experience comfort, safety, and the love of a forever family.

That’s why we proudly pledge to donate 10% of all profits from the Long Paws series directly to greyhound charities.

Every book purchased helps provide food, medical care, shelter and support for dogs in need. By purchasing, enjoying and sharing Long Paws’ adventures, you’re not only spreading awareness – you’re actively helping these gentle, loving dogs find the homes they deserve. Together, we can help secure a kinder future for every greyhound.

Every year, thousands of greyhounds are rescued from racing and need safe, loving homes. With the racing industry in decline, even more dogs will need help – now more than ever is the time to adopt, support rescues, and share their stories.

Every greyhound's new beginning starts with a place to call home.

Why Greyhounds Make Wonderful Pets

Greyhounds are gentle, affectionate dogs who settle beautifully into family life. Despite their racing past, they are famously calm and relaxed at home and quickly become loyal, loving companions. They fit well into many types of households – families with children, first-time dog owners, quieter homes, and even apartments.

What are Greyhound's Really Like:

  • Calm, gentle and affectionate nature
  • Excellent house manners – clean, quiet, and polite
  • Adapt well to smaller homes and flats
  • Require less exercise than most people expect
  • Sleep for much of the day (true couch potatoes!)
  • Usually walk well on the lead and are easy to handle
  • Generally sociable and people-loving
  • Quick to bond with their new family
  • Low grooming needs and low-shedding coats

As with any animal, their own individual nature, history and character play a part. However, because greyhounds are experienced in being handled by trainers and vets, they are used routine and are no strangers to travelling and being transported, it means they are often ready for parts of family life which other dogs or puppies are not. What they really need is someone to show them the ropes and give them all the loving guidance when it comes to settling into and enjoying life as a beloved pet!

Common Misconceptions about Greyhounds:

  • “Greyhounds need loads of exercise” → Short daily walks and plenty of naps are perfect.
  • “They have a high prey drive” → Many live happily with other dogs, cats, or small pets after slow introductions.
  • “Muzzles mean they’re scary and aggressive” → Muzzles are simply racing equipment, not a reflection of temperament.
  • “They’re too big for flats or small homes” → Greyhounds are quiet, calm, and take up very little room when curled up, and because of their super-hygienic nature they’re very good at learning bathroom routines.
  • “They’re nervous or difficult” → Most greyhounds adjust quickly with gentle      guidance and routine.

Greyhound rehoming charities are experts at finding the perfect match for both you and the dog, taking the time to understand your home and lifestyle so every adoption becomes a successful, lifelong partnership.

The Joys of Adopting a Greyhound:

  • Gentle companionship from a dog who loves being close
  • Quiet, peaceful days filled with long naps and soft snuggles
  • Comical “zoomies” that appear from nowhere and end just as fast
  • A loving bond with a dog who is deeply grateful for a second chance
  • Heart-melting looks from a pair of big, soulful eyes
  • A sense of purpose knowing you’ve changed a dog’s life for the better
  • Plus lots more wonderful, loving experiences along the way!

Greyhounds make wonderful, gentle companions who thrive with kindness and a soft bed to call their own. If you’re thinking about adopting, an rescued ex-racer just might be the perfect addition to your family – please find a dedicated greyhound shelter or charity in your local area – and you’ll be giving an incredible dog the second chance they truly deserve.
